I compared footage side-by-side with GoPro Hero4: This camera is better under certain circumstances., October 31, 2016

A lot of people looking at this camera are probably interested in a GoPro but don’t want to shell out the insane price of a Hero5 or Session or whatever. For a tiny fraction of the price of the name brand competition, this camera is an outstanding alternative.

I don’t use this as an action camera. I’m not an athlete or skateboarder or whatever. I use this camera for vlogging and for recording live comedy events. I rented two GoPros (a Hero3+ and a Hero4) which, despite not being the newest models on the market, still cost three or four times what this camera costs. I’m so glad I put my own camera (the Cymas) in the middle and used the other two for side angles, because this camera has better color, better focus, and better sound quality with the built-in mic than either of those cameras in the circumstances I used it.

If you’re looking for a true action camera, the GoPro might be better. But if you’re recording on a tripod and have relatively predictable lighting conditions and sound levels, this camera is a delight. Even in circumstances where the light was unpredictable and the sound levels varied, this camera performed surprisingly well.

If you need an external mic, you’ll have to follow some rather sketchy online tutorials to add an external mic. And though I’m not 100% sure those tutorials will work, I can tell you that from my exploration, this camera is identical to the SJCAM Sj4000 camera internally.

This camera is an excellent buy. The video quality is good, the time lapse option works as expected, the built-in microphone is satisfactory, and the form factor is nearly identical to a GoPro. While GoPro waterproof cases, chargers, and external microphones won’t work with this camera, the included mounts and waterproof case are all compatible with GoPro accessories.

Please, unless you absolutely need full GoPro compatibility, consider this far more economical option. It has yet to disappoint me.

I was amazed at how much quality this camera delivers for the price. I was originally looking for a way to take underwater videos and pictures while snorkling on an upcoming trip to the Caribbean and began looking at waterproof cases for an iPhone. But the most trustworthy looking cases promising to stay airtight to 25 feet seemed to be running around $50 and I just wasn’t sure I wanted to risk ruining a $650 phone. That’s when I discovered the Cymas Full HD 1080P, that delivers 170 degree viewing (which you’ll appreciate underwater), a fool-proof way to start/stop/toggle photos & videos, plus a slew of accessories, all for the around the same price, and offers a lot better results.

Now that I’m back, I can say this camera delivered great pictures. Color balance underwater was surprisingly good, the resolution even better than expected. It gives you the ability to zoom, although full zoom can yield pixelation. I never had a problem w/ leakage. And though this camera is pretty small (I ended up attaching a handheld tripod to hold and direct the camera underwater), it’s really was easy to operate underwater once I got the hang of it. The battery life also was impressive. I probably got a solid 3-4 hours of shooting and reviewing time on the first charge, before the battery hit the final 1/3 mark.

    There are some caveats:
    >There are minimal instructions, and after several online efforts, I could find nothing online that helps you know understand how best to adjust the settings, such as white balance, or cycle times. And I was a bit stumped about how best to use all the accessory pieces. Surely Cymas could have offered a little more help here.
    >It’s too easy when you turn the camera on to have it start video recording automatically. I discovered the camera recorded a series of 3 minute videos of a coffee table one night when I was playing with it and hadn’t realized it was recording.
    >The 2 inch screen is pretty good and bright. But when you’re outside or underwater, it’s still too small to really see if the video/pictures you took came out the way you hoped. But I was able to take plenty of video/pictures without filling up my storage card.
    >You do need to buy a storage card; none comes w/ the camera, but they only cost $9-10.
    >Don’t expect to get good results at night or in dark situations. This camera can’t compare w/ the results we’re all used to on our camera phones. But for what I wanted it for (underwater shots), it did great!
    >Transferring pictures from the storage card to your laptop, as well as the extra work needed to share them, compared to the ease of sharing camera phone photos, takes a little effort. But I’d rather have that than having to replace a $650 phone.

Overall, this camera does an amazing job and exceeded my expectations.

bought originally for a helmet cam for my bike. but it fell off one ride since the backing tape isn’t the best quality. i took the provided mounts and i purchased a charging cable from best buy and its my dashcam in my car.
takes decent quality for a knock off surprisingly. battery lasts 2 hours tops for me. took me awhile to figure out the settings otherwise it would shut off every three minutes.
but it works great no problems for me to complain about minus the mounting tape. i would recommend it.
